Set by Hand — a register of
the classroom printing press

Everything in the room, counted

The sorts in the case, the sheets on the line, the copies in the run, the schools on the list. A classroom press was a small industry that could be inventoried, and the inventory is the clearest description of the craft anyone has.

The Press

The press at the back of the room

A small cast-iron flatbed sized so that a child could ink, lay, pull and lift without help. What that constraint decided about everything else — sheet size, run length, and how many hands a single edition needed.
